Dear State Legislature:

First of all congratulations on the new term, I voted for you all. I think you have done a wonderful job in running the state and I give you kudos for that. I decided to write to you about my opinion on the recent controversy. Recently you all have been dwelling on the situation of not allowing people under the age of eighteen to receive their license. I thought about this for a long time and came up with a proposition to the problem.
Everyday, in high schools around the country there are teenagers dropping out. We need to find out the reason why, and come up with ways to lower the drop-out rate. I know that in my high school having our driver’s license is a huge event in the way that you get to drive to school and the fact that you can leave school anytime you want to. This adds to the drop-out rate because even before this people do not want to be in school, so having a way to leave is not helping the situation. If a teenager had to have their high school diploma or be in their senior year of high school before they get their driver’s license it would make a big impact on the school.
One thing that will happen is that the senior classes will have more people in them. Some teens drop-out before their senior year, with them having to have their license, till their last year, will cause them to stay and to continue their education. By the time you are in your fourth year you might as well stay, also, it would cut down on the traffic. The student parking lot would be empty, but that can be a good thing and then a bad thing. For one, you would not have reckless drivers, but another is that the parents would be there, picking up their children. I think that if you are a senior you should be able to drive to school. Seniors have more driving experience, than other grades.
If you had a policy set, that states you would have to be a senior in high school or you have to have your GED before receiving your driver’s license, the roads would be much safer and parents would be able to sleep easier at night. There would be drivers on the road that have had their permit longer than a year. It would cut down on teenage drinking and driving, which would lower teenage motor vehicle accidents. Every year thousands of teenagers across the country are killed in motor vehicle accidents, if the new law were issued, I believe that this number will decrease dramatically; just for the fact that teenagers would be driving with their permit longer than a year. Some teenagers are safe drivers, but some make huge mistakes in driving.
When you first start the law there will be arguments over it. Soon that would end when the parents do not have to bury their sons or daughters anymore. People would realize that it prevents more deaths and that it is helping every body. Students that want to get out of high school, can instead of waiting until they graduate, they could just go to community college to receive their GED, which is synonymously the same as receiving a high school diploma. The students will be angry but I think that when they get older they will realize that it is for the best.
